The recent Xbox Games Showcase gave us a taste of what’s to come for Microsoft’s premiere next-gen console, the Xbox Series X. As there’s nothing that could possibly go better with a new Xbox console than the latest game in the seminal Halo franchise, it wasn’t much of a surprise that fans were treated to over 11 whole minutes of new gameplay and campaign footage from the upcoming Halo Infinite. The footage showed off everything from Grunt throwing Brutes to the series’ first attempt at crafting an open-world experience.
However, the biggest and long-lasting takeaway from the presentation has been the graphics, which to many fans looked rather unimpressive. In response to the criticism and Digital Foundry’s extensive analysis (and even Domino’s official Twitter dunking on it), Halo community manager John Junyszek released a statement on the matter:
“Based on our learnings from Halo 4, Halo 5, and Halo Wars 2 — along with strong community feedback — we decided to shift back towards the legacy aesthetics that defined the original trilogy. With Halo Infinite, we’re returning to a more ‘classic’ art style which was a key message going back to the very first reveal that garnered enthusiastic and positive responses. This translates to a more vibrant palette, “cleaner” models and objects with less “noise,” though it doesn’t mean less detail.
“While we appreciate this may not be everyone’s personal preference, we stand by this decision and are happy to see it resonating with so many fans around the world.”
